Tesla Model S: 10 Facts You Didn’t Know

The Model S is a roaring high-performance all-electric vehicle that’s incredibly efficient and capable of cross-country trips.

The Tesla Model S is filled with features, some of which are less obvious than the others. Here are ten features of the Model S P85D electric car that you might not have heard of.

Here’s what stood out to us so far. This car is really a hatchback. Tesla calls the Model S a sedan, but it’s really a giant hatchback with enough room for kids to sit backward in an optional third-row jump seat.

Storage

In their rear-wheel-drive models, as Tesla calls it, the frunk has nearly as big as the trunks in some smaller sedans. The size is slightly reduced in all-wheel-drive models like other hatchbacks the back seats of the Model S fold down in 60 40 sections creating a huge flat floor.

You’ll be able to bring home large, awkward items like the rocking chair from an antique store, even with the back seat raised. There’s more room under the Model S hatch than in many SUVs.

Active Cruise Control

These days, many luxury cars have active cruise control that will automatically slow down when approaching a slower car ahead.d most drivers love it, especially the other cars’ drivers.

To prevent being routinely cut off in most of these cars, you have to override the cruise control. This is not the case with the Model S.

Just turn on the left signal, and the Model S accelerates back to set the speed so you can easily dart into an open hole in traffic in the lane to your left.t if you can’t get there, it will still hit the brakes on time to avoid running into the car ahead.

Autopilot Provides Semi-Autonomous Driving.

Tesla enabled its autopilot functionality in 2015. Autopilot is a two thousand five hundred dollar suit of features that includes lane-keeping, adaptive cruise control, automated lane changing assistance activated when you pull on your turn signal.

In addition, it has a self-parking feature that brings the Model S to you from a parking space.

Tesla plans to improve autopilot until the era of self-driving arrives continually, but at this stage, it is intended to make driving easier.

The system doesn’t recognize every type of traffic condition and will disable itself when the weather is bad, or the lanes are not clearly marked.

So, for now, make sure to keep your hands on the steering wheel and remain alert to everything on the road.

Web Browser

A full web browser is one of the biggest convenience breakthroughs of Tesla. Full google maps with live navigation and traffic on a large 17-inch touchscreen control system in the dashboard’s center can be pinched to zoom or swipe to move in real-time, just like a smartphone.

There’s no quicker way to spot traffic ahead and to find an alternate route than the combination of real-time information and intuitive controls.

Lots of cars have touch screens these days, but they’re not as big or fully functional as what Tesla offers. Everything is controlled through the touch screen headlights, ride height setting, climate control, and even the owner’s manual.

The Model S has very few manual controls or buttons. They include just the turn signal, stock power window, buttons, hazard lights, and glove box.

The big screen also pairs with your smartphone via Bluetooth, controls the radio, and displays the navigation system.

Its capabilities go way beyond most screens. It is internet-enabled even while you’re driving. You can display full google satellite maps across most of the surface of the 17-inch screen.

The car’s navigation system displays directions using google maps, and you can browse the internet through a regular web browser and even check out mail.

So just about everything can be done when using your computer, you can also do with a Tesla Model S.

The Model S also offers pandora slacker satellite radio and regular am and F.M. stations.

In addition, the screen also displays a detailed trip computer that tracks your battery power level and tells you where to find the nearest charging station.

Even the sunroof is controlled by swiping a graphical representation of the vehicle on the center of the screen.

Software updates happen over the air. One of the most futuristic aspects of the Model S and inspired the rest of the car industry to follow suit is Tesla’s ability to update the car’s computer over the air via cellular signal.

This allowed the company to remotely adjust the car’s ride height when Model S ran over debris on the road. In addition, it enabled the company to turn on features such as autopilot pandora and slacker when those functions were ready.

Tesla regularly pushes over-the-air security updates. this remote update capability can help keep your Model S’s features up to date years after it leaves the factory.

Charging

Road trips are possible with superchargers. However, perhaps the biggest advantage of owning a Model S is access to Tesla’s network of superchargers.

Any Model S driver can charge up for free at any of the company’s 3,800 or so quick-charging stations across the U.S. Those superchargers live up to their name because they’re fast, providing up to 170 miles of added range in as little as 30 minutes.

  • Tesla Model S New Spec Upgrades in 2020
The Tesla Model S was a revolutionary car when is first released in 2012. It’s impressive range has yet to be beaten by even modern electric cars, but how much has the Model S improved over the years?

That compares to about 50 miles of added range for every hour plugged into one of Tesla’s 72 amp home wall connectors. or 35 miles on a Tesla 48 amp home unit. Tesla has also installed so-called destination charges at hotels, shopping malls, and airports for quick in-town pit stops.

Driving Range

The driving range varies. The range on a single charge is widely seen as the biggest drawback in electric cars, but the Model S has by far the longest range of any electric car.

The official EPA for the range is what the battery is expected to deliver on a full charge.

Some Tesla owners who live in moderate climates and drive at moderate speeds may exceed EPA estimations. On the other hand, Model S owners who live in a cold place or drive with a heavier foot commonly get shorter ranges.

Achieving those high numbers requires fully charging the batteries in the so-called max range mode.

This is useful if you’re planning a long trip and need the extra juice for a longer range. However, Tesla says that the repeated use of the max range can shorten battery life.

Expect the Model S to get about 20 percent fewer miles on a single charge without using the max range mode.

Options can drive up prices. For example, very few customers buy the Model S at its base price; most are loaded with options that Tesla offers at a premium price.

Want to show off your ludicrous mode and your P90D? That’ll be ten thousand dollars. Want to get the most range out of your Model S60’s battery? That’s another nine thousand dollars. An air suspension upgrade goes for twenty-five hundred dollars.

Air Suspension Upgrade

The air suspension keeps the car level regardless of how heavy of a load you’re carrying. It also enables you to adjust the drive settings for a smoother and sportier ride.

And to manually set the ride height raising the Model S to make it easier to get in and out and lowering it for the most efficient highway travel.

The Model S also comes standard with heated front seats, and if you live in cold areas, you might want to opt for the sub-zero weather package.

For one thousand dollars, it adds a heated rear seat and a heated steering wheel. In addition, a panoramic glass sunroof costs approximately one thousand five hundred dollars.

The premium upgrade package for approximately three thousand dollars gets you Tesla’s trademark bioweapons defense mode. A weapon garden cabin air filtration system and a power tailgate Alcantara dashboard trim lighted door handles fog lights and dynamic led headlights.

In addition, Tesla offers an upgraded charger for $1,500 that will allow the Model S to charge up to 72 amps. Most charging is done at home on a standard 240-volt electric car charger.

The fastest units available from competitors commonly deliver 40 amps, adding about 25 to 35 miles of driving range per hour of charging.

If your home electricity can support the service, the upgrade will allow 72 amps, adding about 50 miles of range per hour.

Fires do not pose a threat. the Model S was the subject of recalls in 2013 when two cars caught fire after running over debris on the road.

In the first recall, Tesla simply sent out an over-the-air software update to raise the suspension’s ride height to provide more ground clearance.

The second installed additional titanium shielding on the underside to keep sharp road debris from hitting the battery pack. The quick recall updates mitigated the extremely rare problem.

Electric cars are a lot less prone to catching fire than vehicles powered by gasoline. When Tesla cars caught fire, drivers reported that the car gave them plenty of warning to evacuate.

The Model S aced its U.S. news ranking. The Model S scores 9.4 out of 10 in our scoring, topping our luxury large car rankings. The only other car that scores as high is the two-seat Porsche Boxster.

The Model S speaks volumes about Tesla’s achievements for an all-new car. From an all-new company to outshine nearly every other similar high-performance luxury car is an impressive feat.
