Renault City KZE

Twingo ZE

Volkswagen E-Up

Volkswagen Group is one of the toughest rivals of Renault on the market of affordable EV’s. Over the next few years, Volkswagen intends to become the world market leader in mobility with 36 billion dollars investments throughout the group by 2024.

One-third of this money will be invested mainly in the Volkswagen brand, and this will help reach the first strategic milestone of 1 million electric cars already by the end of 2023.

The latest generation of the Volkswagen e-up unveiled last year comes with an upgraded 32.3-kilowatt hour battery pack to achieve a longer driving range of close to 150 miles.

The base price is around 24,000 dollars before subsidies, but thanks to incentives increase in Germany, the ER cost six thousand five hundred dollars less.

No wonder Volkswagen has received more than 20,000 E-Up electric car orders in Germany over the past three months, compared with the demand for its ICE models.


Volkswagen ID3

Volkswagen’s new ID3 electric model has a starting price of less than thirty-two thousand five hundred dollars, but it’s going to be extremely competitive in Germany, including the $6,500 government incentives.

It’s the first vehicle in the company’s new generation of affordable long-range electric cars. It’s not accidental that Volkswagen has already received more than 30,000 reservations for the upcoming EV.

The ID3 will be available with three different battery packs. The base version equipped with a 45-kilowatt hour battery will be able to achieve a WLTP based range of up to 205 miles, but Volkswagen will first deliver a more expensive variant able to overcome a distance of 340 miles.

The first pre-Booker will have the possibility to get the ID3 already from June 17th, 2020. Unfortunately, the ID3 will not be available in the US since Volkswagen thinks the demand will be too low.

The company has also planned to bring the cheapest ID branded electric model to market by 2024, which is expected to cost less than $20,000 after incentives.


Seat Mii Electric

The most affordable EV from other VW Group brands are Seat Mii electric and Skoda Citigo EIV that share the E-Up platform. The Spanish Seat Mii comes with a 36.8-kilowatt hour battery pack that drives a 61-kilowatt electric motor.

It’s claimed range of 161 miles is good enough for the price it is sold for. The base version of the Seat Mii electric is available for about $22,000 without incentives, so deducting the bonuses of up to $6,500 the price could attract a lot of potential buyers.


Skoda Citigo EIV

The Skoda Citigo EIV that comes with almost the same specs as its brothers can develop a top speed of 81 miles per hour, and when the battery is fully charged, the vehicle can overcome a distance of 160 miles.

The Skoda Citigo EIV costs slightly more than the Seat Mii and is already available in Europe for about twenty-two thousand five hundred dollars before incentives.


Opel Corsa E

The Opel Corsa E and Peugeot 208 are built on the same platform and could be considered as a reliable alternative for the Volkswagen ID3. If you are ready to pay more, they are among the most affordable options in higher-level IV segments.

The Corsa E features a 50-kilowatt hour battery pack and 100 kilowatts electric motor, which delivers 192 pound-feet of torque. The highest claimed range and a WLTP cycle is about 205 miles.

The 50 kilowatts fast charging socket allows the Corsa E to get 62 miles of range in about 19 minutes. It is offered at about thirty-two thousand five hundred dollars without incentives, so the buyer’s final price should be significantly lower.


Peugeot E-208

As Peugeot E-208, it comes as part of Peugeot long term ambitious strategy aimed for an all-electric lineup by 2023. There are no visible differences between electric Peugeot and the Opel Corsa E in terms of the specifications.

They share the same powertrain and come with the same battery pack of 50-kilowatt hour capacity. At the same time, the French carmaker announces a 12 miles more driving range for its compact EV.

The vehicle costs 33 thousand dollars before incentives that customers have the opportunity to buy it with twenty-six thousand five hundred dollars, including incentives.


Mini Cooper SE

Our next hero has inherited its 135 kilowatts electric motor from the BMW I3S. Despite the standard power unit, the all-new Mini Cooper SEI got a slightly smaller battery pack than its elder brother.

The t-shaped 32.6-kilowatt hour battery has enough capacity to deliver a manufacturer estimated range of 110 miles. Due to a 50 kilowatt DC fast charger, the car can get from 0 to 80 percent charge in just 35 minutes.

In its highest sport driving mode, the vehicle can reach 60 miles per hour in 6.9 seconds, and develop a top speed of 93 miles per hour.

The 2020 Mini Cooper SE has a starting price of twenty-nine thousand nine hundred dollars before incentives in the US, but after federal state and local incentives, it could be available for less than twenty thousand dollars in some markets.


Smart EQ4

While previous smart family vehicles were often criticized for high prices, the new Smart EQ forfour and the Smart EQ fortwo can easily compete with all these already mentioned EV’s on build quality. However, they are way behind in terms of specifications.

The model range is still powered by the old 17.6-kilowatt-hour battery pack, which officially should be enough for a range of 81 miles between charging. At the same time, the standard Smart fortwo kilowatts onboard charger can feed the battery to 80% within 40 minutes.
